How We Score
Our methodology for rating baby and toddler snacks
SnackScore ratings are independent editorial opinions based on publicly available ingredient and nutrition information. They are not medical or nutritional advice. Always consult your paediatrician or a qualified dietitian before introducing new foods. Individual children may have allergies, intolerances, or specific dietary needs not reflected in our scores. Always check the product label before feeding.
The four grades
Clean, minimal ingredients. No added sugar or salt. Low processing. Organic or equivalent quality preferred. Age-appropriate texture and format.
Generally good profile with minor concerns — e.g. small amounts of natural fruit concentrate, mild processing, or a single ingredient we would prefer absent. Fine for regular consumption.
Notable issues such as elevated natural sugars, more processed base ingredients, or additives we consider unnecessary for this age group. Occasional treat rather than daily snack.
High added sugar, added salt, artificial flavours or colours, palm oil, or other ingredients we consider inappropriate for babies and toddlers.
What we look at
We read the full ingredients list. Shorter lists with recognisable whole-food ingredients score higher. We flag unnecessary emulsifiers, flavourings, and preservatives.
We distinguish between intrinsic fruit sugars and added sugars (including fruit juice concentrates used purely as sweeteners). Added sugar in any form lowers the score.
No added salt is expected for products aimed at babies under 12 months. Even small amounts are noted for older toddler products.
Minimally processed whole-food snacks score higher than heavily extruded or puffed products, even when the latter are organic.
We check that texture, format, and nutritional profile match the stated minimum age. A product marketed from 6 months is held to a stricter standard than one for 3-year-olds.
Organic certification, no-added-sugar claims, gluten-free, and B Corp status are noted positively. We verify claims against the ingredients list — a claim alone does not raise the score.
What we do not do
- We do not perform laboratory testing — scores are based on label information only.
- We do not accept payment from brands to influence scores.
- We do not rate products based on taste or palatability.
- We do not guarantee that information is current — formulas change; always check the pack.
- We do not provide medical, allergy, or dietary advice.
